You might think that someone who was a psych major would already know this, but what I am about to share is something I’ve only figured out how to do in the last 18 months.  I am not an expert, but I am getting better and practicing.

As children many of us are taught to suppress undesirable emotions.  For example, we may be told don’t be mad, sad, cry or demonstrate feelings that might make someone else (like a parent perhaps) feel uncomfortable.

Nowadays in my work I find more and more information that states it is important to validate a child’s emotions.  Tell the child it is ok to feel what they feel, and then encourage them to think carefully about what actions they will do next while being aware of their feelings.

Sidebar:  Jesus had all the emotions while on earth that we have too.  It’s how we utilize those emotions that matters.  We can welcome the feeling(s) and still be in control of our behavior choices.

Recently I told a friend, “Not that you are…but be enraged if you need to be.  Use it.  Maybe you need a little mad to keep moving.  Feel the feels and let them pass through your body.  Then get back to work.”

I have found that if I fight the feels, then it takes longer for me to get on track.  I have learned to:

  • Pause.  Allow myself to take a time out when I need it.
  • Identify the emotion or emotions.
  • Say in acknowledgement “I feel _______ (fill in the blank).”
  • Visualize the emotion(s) pass through my body.
  • Repeat as needed.  Breathe and exhale through the process.  Release the pain if needed.  Sometimes I thank the emotion for stopping by and for reminding me that I am human.

This process validates rather than fights the feeling.

Key:

  • Fighting or suppressing emotions derails my time management.
  • Validating and identifying an emotion normalizes my feelings and takes much less time to address.

Another time saver is when I pray, “God here is________.  Take it.  Lead me in the direction I should go.”  I am done figuring out anything that my Higher Power can bust through walls and decipher for me.

We have grace for others, we need to have grace for ourselves too.  I’m trying to do so anyway.  It is hard!

God has adamant love for you.  You are not alone.

Proverbs 3:26 …for the LORD will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.

Hebrews 4:16   Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

All the above being said, emotions that get in the way ongoing should be addressed with a professional.  Be brave and seek help from your doctor or therapist as needed.  There is so much power and freedom to be found in tapping into the truth about ourselves.

I’m Back!

Hello.  The last 3 years were almost more than I could handle–and this after I thought I’d had plenty of other challenging times in life over the years!  What did I know?!  I have accepted the fact that life involves continuous learning opportunities.

Fortunately God has provided support in every corner of my heart and mind.  I’m thankful for scripture that speaks louder and stronger than life circumstances.  And I’m grateful for friends who have never given up on me.  What a blessing!  I suspect too many people are isolated these days.  If you don’t have the kind of friends who would drive 2 hours to rescue you from a hospital after your body totally locked up while you were alone in a hotel room and had to be carried out while screaming by 6 EMTs…[Yes, that happened.  Story for another day.]…then here are a few ideas about how to seek more friends:

  • Join a small group or Bible study at your church.  People who grow together over a topic or activity may connect in a lasting way.
  • Sign up for Meet Up groups in your area.  Curious about a craft, hobby or crypto-currency?  There’s a group out there somewhere for you.
  • Show up for community events or causes in your neighborhood.  Being helpful can lead to whole new relationships or interests.

Of course, building friendship(s) takes time.  And it can’t be all about you.  When you are brave to try any of the above ideas, remember to be genuinely interested in getting to know other people.  Listening is one of the best things you can offer to others.

As the title might suggest, I am back to blogging.  And this time I think my confidence has grown enough to stick with it.  The picture in this post is from a special trip in 2016 when I ran away to seek God’s guidance from the highest mountain I could find with the help of 4 other ladies.  Now that is a story & a half!  We’ll get to it.

LIVING TO DIE

Several weeks ago my dear sister gave me a blog post idea. We were talking about anxiety and how she believes people often fall into one of two categories:

LIVING TO DIE or DYING TO LIVE

This rang true with me and many examples I’ve witnessed. So much of how we experience life depends on our personal perspective.

Do we walk around worried about every part of our life? Do we spend hours blaming others in our minds for what they did or didn’t do? Worry and casting blame are dangerous. Don’t feed your soul with those two traps. Worry and blame are empty calories.

Truth is, life is a death sentence. I’m going to die. Everyone will. But if I worry and blame, then I’m stealing from my joy today and tomorrow and the next. My time is precious. Your time is too.

Instead, I want to renew my perspective every day. I want to try and see the world and situations that come up from other people’s perspective so I don’t get bogged down in “my way is the only way”. I want to forgive quickly and love always. I want to enjoy every moment that I can because one of my big goals in life is to not have regrets.

One way to keep my perspective in check is to notice how I spend my thinking time. How many of my thoughts were negative today? How many were positive? I know that in order to move forward with my dreams and goals I must be on the positive thinking track.

Now, I’m a big fan of mental health and getting help when you need it. So if you struggle with anxiety or any physical/mental issue, please take care of yourself and go speak with your doctor or see a therapist. Don’t avoid getting the help you need. Take care of yourself.

One of the ways I renew my perspective is to seek guidance from God’s Word. Today I was inspired by 1 Corinthians 14:33 God is not the author of confusion but of peace.

I also enjoyed verse 38 If any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.

From these two verses I am reminded to leave the ignorant alone. As the saying goes “you can’t fix stupid.” You could waste time trying, but why bother? God says to let them be. And God is the author of peace! Seek peace within. Seek God. Be free. You are free to be the beautiful person God made you to be.

DON’T DRAG THE ORANGE CONES

I cried out wimpered to God on my drive to one of our workshop schools. I longed to read God’s Word, but I had not made the time yet that day. My drive time prayer went something like:

Dear God,
I praise you. You have the answers and you know I am struggling. I’m fighting feelings of being left out or not being picked. Why did they choose someone else over me? Why do I care? And why am I wasting the mind space to think about this? I know if I had read your Word today that peace would fill me and keep me moving forward. I don’t want to battle negativity. I don’t want to hurt like this. Show me what I need to know in order to let this minor pain go. Amen

Then I thought about the kind cards and words I received the previous week from people offering sweet birthday wishes. I thought about how people seem to think I’m a positive person and usually smiling. Yeah, well I’m still plagued with being human. We all have areas to overcome. I don’t want to be phony. The best compliment is when I hear someone say “you’re authentic”. And let me tell you, I can be authentically a mess as well as someone who has it together. Continuous improvement and staying upbeat are goals of mine, but this day I felt kinda low.

Then God provided an illustration.

What is that horrible noise? I thought my tire may have gone flat. I slowed down and stopped. Getting out of the van I saw part of the problem. I had run over orange cones in the school parking lot. Now my van was dragging them. I pulled out a couple cones and returned them to their proper spot. Lord, did anyone see me?

Embarrassed and back in the van, I continued to drive. Then the noise came back. What?! I stopped again. And again. Another cone was wedged under the van and was not coming out unless I crawled underneath on the wet, dirty pavement. My work day was not done so I didn’t want to get dirty.

I drove some more. I considered driving over bumps and dips in the road to encourage the cone to come out.

I felt like God was saying: See. Carrying around hurt and pain is like dragging orange cones. They cause you to have to stop and start a lot.

Then the cone fell out. My time wasted dragging orange cones was over. I raised an eyebrow toward heaven and considered how that experience was a perfect illustration of how we drag negativity around with us.

God will take care of the orange cones. I don’t need to drag those painful feelings with me. Negativity will only slow me down.

Today I will read God’s word earlier in the day and dwell on verses that fill me with comfort and joy.

If you are carrying around orange cones, here are a couple helpful verses. God bless you. May you be encouraged.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9

BETRAYAL

It happens.

And I’m not talking about ____ (fill in the blank, try to keep it clean).

I’m talking about betrayal. Ouch!

Betrayal is part of life and yet most of us are surprised when it happens. If you live long enough someone will disappoint you, hurt you and leave you…intentionally or unintentionally.

I like to think most people don’t want to hurt someone else on purpose. I like to think most hurt is unintended. But when betrayal is on purpose anything could be the root cause of someone’s decision to hurt another human; perhaps they have the opportunity to get ahead at work, or they decide they don’t like you anyway, or they care more about xyz than they do you, or they rationalize in their mind that they are right and you’ll get over it, or temptation got the best of them. Who knows, right?

And how often when we do not know the root cause of why the betrayal happened we dwell on the reasons why? Why, why did they do this? Ugh. We dwell. For days. Or months. –What a waste of precious mind power!

When we read scripture and learn about Jesus, notice how he rolled with the punches. Jesus was not surprised when Judas betrayed him. Jesus wasn’t surprised when Peter went back to fishing when he should have been out sharing the gospel.

Jesus said things like, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34

If Jesus could hang on a cross and still say forgive them, then how can we not strive to offer the same love in our day to day situations?

The punches come and go. Try to roll with life like Jesus. And seek guidance from Above to heal your pain…so you don’t dwell, so you don’t replay the tapes in your head over and over again.

You are worth more than wasted energy. You are precious and every human is learning at a different rate. Allow the space for personal growth. Look at betrayal as pruning; perhaps you needed less of that person in your life anyway. Allow peace and forgiveness in your heart.

Remember that Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4

I believe some of the most successful people are those who forgive and overlook quickly. They do their best not to waste a moment of precious time or mind power. Learning to accept betrayal as part of life and learning how to forgive quickly may not be easy, but practice makes imperfect bearable.

GRATITUDE WALK

Sometimes I focus too much on challenges ahead or on things I want to happen. While I’m all for big goals and dreams, my mind and body slows down or trips over my bigger dream when I should focus on what I can accomplish today. What task can I do today that will ultimately help get me closer to the dream I seek?

Am I anxious and worried about what I haven’t done yet instead of relaxing and working on the tasks at hand? Do I do nothing when I could be doing something? Occasionally I shut down when I should get busy. And sometimes fear leads me to work on the less important tasks instead of focusing on what I know must be priority.

One calming exercise for me is to take a Gratitude Walk around the house (or anywhere). I thank God for things like laundry detergent, clothes, heat, family, pets, food, a quality vacuum cleaner, etc. You name it, there is so much to be thankful for.

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Once I give thanks, I make my to-do list. I ask God to help me complete what can be done today and He can take care of the big goal in His time. Then it’s my turn to get busy.

Don’t let your mind or anxiety slow you down. Greater things are yet to come…one grateful step at a time.
